چکیده

Salt tolerance of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum (Moric.) C. Koch (Chenopodiaceae), a stem-succulent halophyte most commonly found in the intertidal regions of the provinces of Sind and Balochistan, Pakistan, was investigated. Plants were grown for 125 d at six sodium chloride (NaCl) concentrations from 0 to 1000 mM to determine the effects of salinity on ion accumulation, plant water status, and biomass. Shoot biomass was greatest at 200 to 400 mM NaCl, but it was inhibited at salinities of 600 mM NaCl or higher. Tissue water content (g g−1dry mass) of shoots under 200 to 600 mM NaCl treatments was higher than under the control nutrient solution, equal to the control at 800 mM NaCl, but significantly lower at 1000 mM NaCl than under all other treatments, indicating an increase in shoot succulence at salinity levels up to that of seawater. Ash content increased with added salt, but was about 60% of plant dry mass under all salinity treatments. The Na+ and Cl− concentrations of shoots were significantly higher under 1000 mM NaCl than under the control treatment. These results indicate that A. macrostachyum is salt tolerant and capable of accumulating large quantities of Na+ and Cl− when treated with from 200 to 1000 mM NaCl.

The SsDREB Transcription Factor from the Succulent Halophyte Suaeda salsa Enhances Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Transgenic Tobacco

Dehydration-responsive element-binding (DREB) transcription factor (TF) plays a key role for abiotic stress tolerance in plants. In this study, a novel cDNA encoding DREB transcription factor, designated SsDREB, was isolated from succulent halophyte Suaeda salsa. This protein was classified in the A-6 group of DREB subfamily based on multiple sequence alignments and phylogenetic characterizatio...

Physiological and proteomic analyses of salt stress response in the halophyte Halogeton glomeratus

Very little is known about the adaptation mechanism of Chenopodiaceae Halogeton glomeratus, a succulent annual halophyte, under saline conditions. In this study, we investigated the morphological and physiological adaptation mechanisms of seedlings exposed to different concentrations of NaCl treatment for 21 d. Our results revealed that H. glomeratus has a robust ability to tolerate salt; its o...

Increased vacuolar Na(+)/H(+) exchange activity in Salicornia bigelovii Torr. in response to NaCl.

Shoots of the halophyte Salicornia bigelovii are larger and more succulent when grown in highly saline environments. This increased growth and water uptake has been correlated with a large and specific cellular accumulation of sodium. In glycophytes, sensitivity to salt has been associated with an inability to remove sodium ions effectively from the cytoplasm in order to protect salt-sensitive ...

Activation of Lignin Biosynthetic Enzymes During Internodal Development of Aeluropus littoralis Exposed to NaCl

Lignin is one of the major characteristics of plant secondary cell wall that provides structural rigidity for the cells and tissues and hydrophobicity to tracheary elements. Internode tissues of Aeluropus littoralis as a halophyte grass were sampled at different developmental stages (from the first to the fifth internodes ) and under different NaCl concentrations. The influences of NaCl and int...

Salt cress. A halophyte and cryophyte Arabidopsis relative model system and its applicability to molecular genetic analyses of growth and development of extremophiles.

Salt cress (Thellungiella halophila) is a small winter annual crucifer with a short life cycle. It has a small genome (about 2 x Arabidopsis) with high sequence identity (average 92%) with Arabidopsis, and can be genetically transformed by the simple floral dip procedure. It is capable of copious seed production. Salt cress is an extremophile native to harsh environments and can reproduce after...
